Note: I made a photo album of the week-end in a Story “Ticino” on my profile Instagram
Coucou,
Comment vas-tu?
How are you? What are you going to do this Sunday? It's cold and rainy here. So to cheer myself up a bit and be positive, I'm going to tell you about my last w-e, which was a real adventure in every sense of the word. My family and I were invited to spend the weekend with friends at their holiday home in Cavigliano in Ticino. Ticino is the Italian part of Switzerland. Except that I wasn't aware of some of the details that made this weekend a moment out of time. On Friday, at 3.30pm, we set off to catch the first train. In total, we had to catch 4 trains. Between each connection, we had to hurry, and with my 2.5 year old daughter who wanted to walk by herself like a grown-ups, that wasn't always easy. Finally, for the last train, we only had 6 minutes to catch it, so with my daughter in my arms and our bags on our backs, we ran and ran and ran and got on the train to the minute.

I was amazed to discover an old train, dating from 1923. It felt like another era. The funny thing was that it never started and we had to catch another one just as old. Finally, at 7.30pm, we arrived in Cavigliano. So far, nothing out of the ordinary. Jos, our friend, was waiting for us at the station and there he pointed to a small spot of light in the mountain opposite and told us that this was where the house was and that it could only be reached on foot. For this reason, he had insisted on taking only rucksacks, not suitcases, and a baby carrier bag to carry Choe, as it was impossible for my daughter to climb such steep slopes in the dark. When we finally reached the house, I was dropping, but happy to have finally arrived at the destination. The house is made of old stone, has no wifi, no network, no heating and no door. The toilet is in the garden and the shower has a bit of warm water, but only for a few minutes and not all the time. The house is rustic to say the least, but charming.

I have to tell you, it was a short and complicated night. My daughter was ill and I couldn't sleep because the bed was so narrow. And as there are no curtains or doors on the windows, there was too much light and all kinds of noise. But the next morning at 6.30am, what a surprise to discover a brilliant sun and a magnificent view from the terrace and garden. It was a joy that made me forget everything else. We had a copious breakfast on the terrace, and armed with a picnic and the kids in baby carriers, we set off for a hike in the nearby mountains. My goodness, my legs still remember the endless rocky climbs. Yes, I can hear you saying "M'enfin Maud, of course, in the mountains you have to climb, Switzerland isn't a flat country like Belgium" yes, but.... joking aside, we were really lucky, it was 20 degrees and after months of rain, cold and snow in Zurich, what happiness this sunshine brought. The walk was great, the views magnificent and we had a picnic break on a little beach where there was sand, clear water and pebbles everywhere, much to the delight of the children.

Maud
In the evenings, I loved being by the fire, cooking, tidying up and then going to bed. The second night was better, as I was so exhausted from the lack of sleep and the long hike that I fell asleep in the arms of Morpheus without asking for a rest. On Sunday, we did another long hike and by 5pm we were on our way back to Zurich, exhausted but happy. The only problem was that the trains were overcrowded and we spent the whole journey standing up or sitting on the floor, which made things difficult with Chloe as she couldn't sit still. Finally, after the 4 return trains, at 9.30pm, we were finally home and what a joy it was to find my big bed, curtains, doors and a hot shower. I waited until Monday to switch my mobile phone back on, and I have to admit, it felt really good to be completely disconnected. On that note, I hope you had a great Sunday and I'll see you soon.
